Lots to see, do, eat, drink, taste, learn and enjoy this month on Hawaii Island. LUVA Real Estate also wants to let you know that something VERY interesting is currently happening in Volcanoes National Park if you are on island now and over the next few weeks. The lava lake at Halemaumau Crater is filling with lava and the nightly glow is the strongest it has been since the caldera opened up ten years ago! So, if you want to see the lava from a safe distance with easy access, go to the Jagger Museum at the park and put that on your things to do list in May, too!

Hokulea Voyaging Canoe Tour 

When: Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Kawaihae Harbor, North Kohala
Hōkūleʻa will remain in the waters of Hawaiʻi Island until the end of May during which the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) will be engaging thousands of public and private school students with canoe visits and hands-on educational activities custom tailored to every age that highlight wayfinding and voyaging through the lenses of math, science, conservation and culture.

Ka’u Coffee Festival Ho’olaule’a – Pahala

When: May 5, 2018
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m
Where: Pahala Community Center.
Enjoy a full day of live music, hula, local food  and crafts, keiki activities, educational displays, guided coffee tastings and farm/mill tours headquartered inside and out of the Pahala Community Center. It’s a great place to “talk story” with Ka’u coffee growers whose region is becoming world famous. The Ka’u Coffee Experience offers Ka’u coffees prepared using a variety of methods by professional baristas from 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1-3:30 p.m. Farm tours with shuttle transport are 9:30 and 11 a.m., plus 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m., $20. Kona Orchid Society Orchid Show, Plant & Craft Sale

When: May 11 and 12, 2018
Times: 9 AM till 6 PM Friday, May 11; 8am-4pm Saturday, May 12.
Where: Old Airport Beach Park’s Maka’eo pavilion.
Featuring orchid vendors from alll over the island with exotic orchid species and exciting new hybrids. Other vendors will be selling dragonfruit plants; protea plants and flowers; air plants; day lilies; herbs; fruit trees and more. There will also be jewelry, fine art, fused glass, ceramics, pottery, nurturing gemstones, photography, handpainted cards, driftwood sculptures and honey bee products, and more. Free to the public. 40th Annual Hawai’i Island Visitor Industry Charity Walk – Waikoloa Beach Resort

When: May 12, 2018
Time: 5am check-in; run starts 6:45am, walk begins 7:00am
Where:  Queens’ Marketplace, Waikoloa Beach Resort
Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association’s Annual Charity Walk Fundraiser benefits non-profit agencies on the Island of Hawai’i. The 5k fun run and walk includes food stations hosted by member hotels and resorts restaurants, children’s activities, silent auction and live entertainment. There is a $35 fee to enter. What: Hawai’i Kuauli Pacific and Asia Cultural Festival – Kailua-Kona

When: May 18-20, 2018
Time: 5 pm
Where: Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel
A celebration of Hawai’i island as a cultural melting pot, this three day event will be packed with food, fashion, cultural expressions, a keiki hula competition and cultural workshops. The event begins Friday day evening with protocol from the various cultures represented. Saturday is filled with a wearable arts fashion show, arts & crafts demonstrations and the first annual Hawaii Kuauli keiki hula competition. Sunday is a day of cultural workshops and education. The festival is a culturally based experience for both local residents and visitors.. Cost: Wearable Arts Fashion Show – $10. Keiki Hula Competition – $10; 5-10 years, $5; Under 4 years, free. Annual Farm Festival at Hamakua Harvest – Honoka’a

When:May 20, 2018
Time:  8:00 AM to 3 PM
Where: Hamakua Harvest is located at the intersection of the Mamalahoa Highway and Mamane Street just outside of Honoka’a at 44-2600 Mamalahoa Hwy.

Want to blend all the things we love about Hawaii Island in one event? Local food, Hawaiian culture, hand made products, art and education for the family AND a chance to see a part of the island that still holds onto its roots in agriculture and sustainability.

Enjoy  locally produced goods and artisanal food available from numerous vendors and  see an all-day lineup of some of the best local musicians and stop by the educational presentations or the hands-on exhibits. Children will enjoy the expanded Keiki zone. Treat yourself to anything from fancy dinners to local products at the Silent Auction. Joshua Lanakila Mangauil of the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hamakua opens the festivities with a traditional Hawaiian protocol, and the cultural center’s hula halau will take the stage to entertain and inspire. Honoka’a Western Week Parade and Block Party

Time: Parade starts at 5 pm on May 25th Block Party is from 3-10 pm
