For those of us who live in West Hawaii, we are seeing training runners/bikers and swimmers descending upon Kona as we gear up for IronMan in a few weeks! First Friday “Art After Dark” Event

Kings’ Shops Cultural Festival

Bring the whole family for a day of free entertainment, free activities and demonstrations showcasing Hawaiian culture. There will be kapa stamping, lauhala weaving, coconut frond weaving, info booths by Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative, Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center, Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua, Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association and DLNR-DAR Marine Wildlife Program. Beginning at 10am, enjoy the music of popular Hawaiian music group Waipuna, and Grammy award winners Kalani Pe’a, and Sonny Lim. The show will open with hula by Mana’olana O Kohala led by kumu Hope Keawe, accompanied by John Keawe. Scheduled activities include a 9am Guided Petroglyph Tour, 10am Basic Flower Lei Making, 12pm Introductory Hula Lessons, and 2pm Beginner ‘Ukulele Lessons.
1st Annual Big Island Ube Festival

A celebration of the much loved purple yam. Enjoy live entertainment; prize giveaways; local food and retail vendors; and chefs from all over the island competing in the Ex-UBE-rant Cook Off! Run for the Dry Forest

WHERE: Pu’u Wa’awa’a
The annual Run for the Dry Forest at Pu’u Wa’awa’a is a 10km run, 5km run/walk and 1/4 mile keiki run, with a 7:30am start. You can choose to run or walk a 5km course (suitable for most people), or do a 10 km run (an “extreme trail running experience” featuring a 1200 ft elevation gain in the first 3 miles). There is also a fun, non-competitive 1/4 mile run of flat surfaces; parents are welcome to join the kids. Pu’u Wa’awa’a is home to several species of endangered birds and many endangered plants, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Proceeds from the race events contribute to conservation of these species. Registration is required. PLEASE NOTE: No pets are allowed, as there are endangered nene geese in the area.
