With minimal light pollution and home to the world’s largest mountain (Mauna Kea), it is clear why the Big Island has spectacular spots for stargazing! Learn how the Polynesians used stars and constellations as navigation tools on a guided stargazing tour with Mauna Kea or you can drive to the top of Mauna Kea check out the stars on your own! While the visitor center is currently closed for construction, you can still drive to the center to admire the stars from 9,200 ft in elevation. If you have 4WD you can venture up another 5,000ft in elevation to Mauna Kea’s Summit where there are world-class telescopes used by astronomers from all over the world. Be sure to drink plenty of water and rest at the visitor center to allow your body to adjust to the altitude before driving to the summit.
