It is almost the New Year and LUVA Real Estate is giving you the low down on the fun New Year’s Eve parties and fireworks displays and what is coming up this weekend, and into January, too! We wish you a very safe and fun New Year’s Eve celebration and good fortune and gratitude as we head into 2019.

Wailea Village 21st Annual Mochi Pounding

When: December 29, 2018 from 8 am-2 pm.
Where: Akiko’s Buddhist B&B, Hakalau
A traditional Japanese mochi-pounding event that started with 23 people, mostly neighbors that now welcomes between 600-700 people. Free to the public. Saturday is the Mochi Pounding celebration, making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way: everyone takes their turn at pounding the glutinous sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local-style lunches will be available for $5. New Year’s crafts, food vendors, Okinawan taiko drumming, Hawaiian entertainment and more. December 31st- New Year’s Eve Parties:

Hilton Waikoloa Village’s 2018 New Year’s Eve Party

Fairmont Orchid New Year’s Eve partygoers who don’t want to jump from venue to venue, getting dinner here, drinks there, will want to check out what the Hilton Waikoloa Village has in store. Opening its doors early, at 7 p.m., specialty dinner food stations will be set up throughout the venue, meaning you can indulge on chilled spicy shrimp, Angus prime rib, ginger miso Kanpachi and more. KapohoKine’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show

Head down to Hilo Bay’s first-ever New Year’s Eve fireworks show, sponsored by tour company KapohoKine Adventures. Free and open to the public, this explosive display of lights and color will start at midnight and continue for 15 minutes. If you want a better view of the show, sign up for KapohoKine Adventures’ paddle-out experience, which will move you closer to the pyrotechnics barge on a single or double-seat kayak. $89 for the New Year’s Paddle Out Experience, Hilo Bay, Hilo, kapohokine.com/new-years-eve-paddle-out-fireworks-experience.

Fairmont Orchid’s New Year’s Eve Journey into 2019

If you want dinner, a show and a little something after, this all-evening event will satisfy the whole family. Canoe rides, face painting and temporary tattoos will keep the keiki occupied early, followed by a dinner buffet and stage performance. 9th Annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival

When: January 1-9, 2019
Where: Various locations from Waimea to the Four Seasons Hualalai
If you love surfing, adventure, underwater filming, and having your perspective on the world enlarged, this is a fantastic film fest! The festival brings an immersive visual experience to the island each January, offering guests heart-pounding adventure, giant surf, marine life, international expeditions and ocean action, all while garnering greater insight and understanding into the ocean environment and island culture. Breakfast Talks provide an intimate setting for guests to connect with filmmakers and special guests to ask questions and hear the behind-the-scenes stories that bring the films to life. Films will screen in Waimea (Kahilu Theatre, HPA Gates, Parker Theatre) and at the Fairmont Orchid.

Monthly “Kokua Kailua” Village Stroll and Hulihe`e Palace

When: January 20, 2019 from 1 pm – 6 pm
Where: Kailua Kona Village
Free Hawaiian music and hula on the Palace’s South Lawn at 4 p.m., presented by the Daughters of Hawai`i. Bring your own beach mat or chair. Before and after the Palace performance, stroll thru historic Kailua Village (the Stroll starts at 1pm & goes till 6pm), enjoy over 100 vendor booths, plus oceanside restaurants, local musicians & artists. ‘Iolani Luahine Hula Festival

When: January 25 & 26, 2019
Where: Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay
The 17th annual ‘Iolani Luahine Hula Festival was established in 2003 with a vision to perpetuate the hula, and it also serves as a way to honor the memory of kumu hula ‘Iolani Luahine and her contributions to the preservation of hula and Hawaiian culture. This year the festival will again include hula presentations, and a challenge to kumu hula with a prize for the one who best demonstrates the values of ‘Iolani Luahine: education and Hawaiian culture. The festival will feature hula workshops and Ni’ihau shell jewelry workshops with Kumu Kele Kanahele featuring lei in the kiponapona style. Hula presentations will begin at 4pm on Friday and feature makuahine, makuakane and kupuna hula presentations. Saturday will begin at 1pm and will feature the keiki, wahine and kane presentations. The hula presentations on both days are a free community event and everyone is invited to attend! Donations will be gratefully accepted to support the festival. An evening Hawaiian music concert which helps support the festival will be offered; tickets will be available online and at the door. On Saturday, the festival will offer quality Hawaiian arts and crafts by local artisans beginning at 11:00 am. Annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival

When: February 2, 2019
Where: Waimea at Church Row Park
The festival showcases the 60+ year old cherry trees planted at Church Row Park and the Japanese tradition of viewing them – hanami. The festival includes a variety of activities during the day at venues throughout Waimea – look for pink banners identifying site locations from the Parker Ranch Historic Homes on Mamalahoa Hwy. 190 to the Hawaiian Homestead Farmer’s Market on Hwy. 19. Enjoy an all day lineup of Japanese and multi-cultural performing arts, plus hands-on demonstrations of bonsai, origami, traditional tea ceremony, and mochi pounding, and a host of colorful craft fairs.
