Mele Kalikimaka! If you are here on-island right now, you know that the temperature AND the humidity have dropped in the past few weeks, giving us a nice feeling of the change in seasons. If you are planning a visit, there are a variety of things to do before Christmas including the LUVA Sip and Paint event, the annual holiday parade, the Kailua village stroll for shopping for gifts and an art stroll in Holualoa Music and Light Festival where Santa will be waiting to take photos with your family and friends. Hilton Waikoloa Village’s ‘Ohana Christmas Craft Festival

WHEN: November 30-December 1, 2019 from 9am to 5pm (Sat) and 9am to 4pm (Sun).
WHERE: Hilton Waikoloa Resort Ballroom

Sip and Paint Hawaii

WHEN: Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 6 –9 pm
WHERE: Papa Kona’s in the Waterfront Row building
Artist and Realtor Lisa Greenwell Hummel will be leading a group in a paint & sip fundraising event sponsored by LUVA Real Estate at the old Daylight Mind restaurant with spectacular views of the sunset and ocean. You can purchase tickets for $25 for two drink tickets and pupus or $50 for the painting, drink tickets and food. First Friday in Holualoa

WHEN: December 6, 2019 from 5:30- 8:30 pm
WHERE: Holualoa Village
Holualoa Village hosts the festive holiday edition of its monthly community event, First Friday Art After Dark. Village galleries will feature new art and artists, tasty street eats, and a range of musical performances. This community event is free and for all ages.

Christmas With the Chefs

WHEN: December 14, 2019 5:30-8 pm
WHAT: Annual Fundraising Outdoor Dining Event
The isle’’s top chefs create tasty holiday fare and festive gingerbread displays at Christmas with the Chefs at Hawai’i Island’s premier holiday extravaganza on the seaside grounds of Courtyard King Kamehameha’’s Kona Beach Hotel. Members of the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Kona Kohala Chefs Association delight attendees with plates of expertly prepared savory cuisine and delectable holiday treats—all accompanied by handcrafted ales, choice wines and 100 percent Kona coffee. The Bill Noble Trio, with Jeannine Guillory-Kane on vocals, jazzes up the evening for dancing under the stars fronting historic Kamakahonu Bay. A silent auction will tempt would-be Santas with an array of holiday gift ideas while supporting local businesses. Tickets are $90 and sold online at www.konakohalachefs.org and at Westside Wines. Tables of 10 are $1250, which include reserved table seating, table service and select bottles of wine.

22nd Annual Arc of Kona Bazaar – Kealakekua

WHEN: December 7, 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: 81-1065 Konawaena School Road, Kealakekua.

Holualoa Music and Light Festival, Kona

WHEN: December 7, 2019 from 5:30-8:30pm
WHAT: Witness the lighting of the town Christmas tree, listen to musicians perform Christmas music thru the evening at stages around the village, and receive treats from the galleries and shops in this charming little artists’ colony in the middle of Kona coffee country. Twilight Christmas Parade – Waimea

WHEN: December 7, 2019 at 5:00pm
WHERE: Starting at Church Row, and ending at Waimea Town Park.
Visit with Santa at Parker Ranch Center immediately after the parade and have a free picture taken with him. There will be goody bags for all children, while supplies last. Charitable donations will be accepted to benefit the Waimea Lions Club and North Hawai`i Hospice.

Annual Kailua-Kona Community Christmas Parade

WHEN: December 14, 2019 at 5 pm
WHERE: The annual Kailua-Kona Community Christmas Parade begins at Kekuaokalani Gym next to Kona Aquatic Center, go south on Kuakini, down Palani Rd., and along Ali’i Drive to Walua Road, ending at Royal Kona Resort.

Enjoy dozens of parade floats, community groups and a mobile spirit of the holidays!

3rd Annual Kainaliu Kalikimaka

WHEN: December 14, 2019 from 5-8:30pm
WHERE: Kainaliu Main Street
Take a walk down Kainaliu main street and enjoy the holiday season island-style. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and vendors will be sparkling with lights and open late for all to enjoy. From Sandy’’s Drive-In to the Aloha Theatre there will be holiday cheer and aloha. Afternoon at the Palace Concert/Hula, Village Stroll and Free Concert!

WHEN: December 15, 2019
WHERE: Kailua Village
Free Hawaiian music and hula on the grounds of Hulihe’e Palace on Alii Drive from 4-5pm. Bring your own beach mat or chair. Before and after the Palace performance, stroll thru historic Kailua Village (the Stroll starts at 1pm & goes till 6pm), enjoy over 100 vendor booths, plus oceanside restaurants, local musicians & artists. The Kailua Business Assn. will present a free holiday concert with Ekolu Mea Nui Trio to the public from 5-6pm in Emma’s Square across from the Palace. 15th Annual Jingle Bell Beach 5k Fun Run/Benefit

WHEN: December 22, 2019 from 7:30-10:30 am
WHERE: Coconut Grove Marketplace
The Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run has grown into the largest 5k run/walk on the Big Island. This fun and festive holiday-themed event encourages participation from all ages and fitness levels, and benefits Kiwani Club of Kailua-Kona. The event starts and finishes along the stunning oceanfront setting of historic Ali’i Drive at the Coconut Grove Marketplace.  Entry fee. Wailea Village 22nd Annual Mochi Pounding

WHEN: December 28, 2019 from 8 am-2 pm.
WHERE: Akiko’s Buddhist B&B, Hakalau
A traditional Japanese mochi-pounding event that started with 23 people, mostly neighbors that now welcomes between 600-700 people. Free to the public. Saturday is the Mochi Pounding celebration, making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way: everyone takes their turn at pounding the delicious sticky rice for good luck. Fire building starts at 7 a.m. to steam the rice. Hearty local-style lunches will be available for $5. New Year’s crafts, food vendors, fortune telling, massage, I Ching readings, floral arrangements, plantation stories, Okinawan taiko drumming, Hawaiian entertainment & more. Waimea Ocean Film Festival

WHEN: January 1-8, 2020
WHERE: South Kohala Resorts
The 2020 annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival (Waimea Film) is January 1-8 with screenings and programming January 1-4 in Waimea, The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai‘i and the Mauna Kea Resort before moving January 5-8 to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Festival passes are available online at www.waimeaoceanfilm.org. The Waimea Ocean Film Festival brings an action-packed lineup of films, filmmaker Q&As, speakers, exhibits and presentations to the island each January, providing an immersive film festival experience complete with heart-pounding adventure, giant waves, wildlife, ocean panoramas, important topics and all-around inspiration.

Over 70 films feature ocean experience, ocean environment, island culture, inspiring stories and tales of epic adventure. Breakfast Talks and presentations provide a rare opportunity for guests to hear from filmmakers and speakers as they share up-to-date information or stories behind-the-scenes. The 2020 Festival Program will be posted to the website in PDF format for convenient download around December 20. In addition, the daily lineup of festival offerings will be posted on facebook each morning throughout the festival.
